Steven's Rock Calendar: Super Bowl XLVII Edition

updated for 2013

For everyone ready for some football one last time, here's a special edition of my Rock Calendar looking at the top songs on game day through the years. In our daily Rock Calendar on Twitter, we look at a particular date (usually the current calendar date) and note what happened, as well as the song or album you would have heard on the radio as Number One at that time. For this special edition, I've also included the cover story from the current issue of Time magazine, offering a shapshot of newsworthy and cultural events of the day.

Rock Calendar is only one of the boundless acres of joy you'll find if you follow me on Twitter @StevenWABX and my more respectable doppelganger @RickWIKY and follow Evansville's Classic Rock @1075WABX and @104fmWIKY. Even if you'd prefer not to follow, you can still read the tweets. you just won't be able to post anything in response, you poor unfortunate soul :(

I guess it's obvious that this is where I make the mandatory shameless plug for you to follow me on Twitter. Pretty Please?.

It's interesting to note the variety of artists who show up in the albums and songs. there are the obvious superstars, as well as some who came and went quickly, such as Tiffany and Vanilla Ice, non-traditional acts like Jamie Foxx, and a couple of charity projects, Dionne Warwick's "That's What Friends Are For" and the "Hope For Haiti" compilation

For stats geeks like me, The Beatles lead the way with five appearances, followed by Michael Jackson with three, and 14 acts made the list twice. The Beatles had the number one song the week of the 1968 game, and the top album for three consecutive years ('68-'70), as well as the "One" compilation in 2001. If you feel generous, add two solo appearances from George Harrison, with the most popular album and song during game week in 1971, and two from John Lennon in 1981 to make it nine Fab Four appearances and to extend that consecutive album Beatle streak to four years.

There have been eleven games when the same artist had both the most popular album and the top song, most recently last year, when Adele's song "Set Fire To The Rain" and her LP "21" sat atop the charts. As noted above, The Beatles, George Harrison and John Lennon accounted for three of those years. It also happened for The Monkees, Carly Simon, Elton John, Men At Work, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, and OutKast. The other artists who made two apperances are Barbra Streisand, Phil Collins, Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey and Beyonce.
