This week marks the 10th anniversary of the catastrophic ice storm of 2009.
14 First Alert Meteorologist Byron Douglas said the storm was crippling for the entire region.
“The worst of it was across western Kentucky,” Douglas told the WIKY Morning Show. “Some folks in Muhlenberg, Ohio and McLean counties didn’t have power for six weeks. Not only did the ice stick around, it stuck around for a long period of time and did a lot of damage.”
Some areas in western Kentucky had up to 2 inches of ice.
Food, water and gas were in high demand, and travel was nearly impossible because of the downed trees and power lines.
Governor Steve Beshear called the storm, the “biggest natural disaster in modern Kentucky history.” He deployed the National Guard to clear roads and provide emergency supplies.
Debris cleanup would continue into the following summer.
