This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and a man who lost his brother that day is embarking on a special tribute. Firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller was off the clock and on his way to play golf on September 11, 2001, but when he heard on his scanner that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, he turned around, got his gear and drove to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.
It had already been closed off due to security concerns, so Stephen strapped his equipment to his back and walked through the tunnel towards the Twin Towers. He died that day, along with so many others, and his brother, Frank Siller, is making a journey to honor him and other first responder heroes.
Frank, 68, is walking 537 miles over the course of six weeks, from the Pentagon to the site of the Flight 93 crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania to New York City. He began his trek on Sunday, laying a wreath at the Pentagon. “Our first mission is to make sure we never forget what happened 20 years ago,” Frank said at a kickoff press conference. “We must honor the sacrifice.”
