A Mt. Vernon teen is the recipient of the Gray Farms Presidents Scholarship.
Sophie Kloppenburg will receive $1,000 and will attend Columbia University this fall.
She plans to study sustainable development and chemistry.
Last year Kloppenburg learned of the lynching of seven innocent black men on the courthouse lawn in Mt. Vernon over 140 years ago.
She couldn’t find any acknowledgement of this anywhere, so she approached the county commissioners.
In October Kloppenburg unveiled a memorial bench and history marker on the courthouse lawn and received a standing ovation.
