Governor Mike Braun has officially signed House Bill 1165 into state law.
Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Diana Moers joined forces with state leaders to craft the bill, which focuses on strengthening penalties for animal cruelty.
When the new law takes effect on July 1, certain acts of animal cruelty will be considered a felony.
Her inspiration was the Shayna Burko case.
She is a repeat offender who is currently facing animal cruelty charges in Warrick County.
The law also allows Hoosiers to free an animal from a hot vehicle without liability.
