One Canadian town no longer wants to be toxic.
After 120 years, the Quebec city of Asbestos has voted to change its name. From now on, it will be known as Val-des-Sources or Valley of the Springs. The town was originally named for the largest asbestos mine, found in 1897, before the mineral was identified as a toxic substance that could cause cancer.
Over the past few years, the city’s six-thousand residents became involved in a debate on how to distance themselves from the poison. This week, nearly 52-percent of them chose a new path.
