The Southbound Twin Bridge will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday.
Kentucky State Police will return to the scene of a fatal crash for reconstruction and follow-up documentation.
“Anytime we have an incident on the Twin Bridges, it can snarl traffic well up into Evansville and down the Henderson strip and beyond,” said Keith Todd of KYTC.
During the closure, traffic will be alternated at 5-minute intervals on the northbound bridge. It’s a new strategy that was deployed for the first time on Monday.
“This particular crash reconstruction investigation will give us a chance to help refine some of that process we’ve been using,” Todd said.
The alternating traffic flow will allow emergency vehicles to cross the river and help to alleviate some of the congestion on Highway 41.
“Our local people are pretty good about planning around anytime we have a work zone up there,” Todd said. “Of course, we have a lot of cross country travelers who have no idea. They just happen to be traveling through at the time something is going on.”
Todd said the closure reinforces the need for another bridge over the Ohio River.
“This just points to the need for us to keep moving ahead with efforts to build a new I-69 bridge to provide us with a way to siphon off some of that traffic and help improve traffic flow whenever we have a blockage,” he added.
The Twin Bridges carry around 40,000 vehicles a day between Evansville and Henderson.
