For 65 years, Boy Scout Troop 399 has been selling Christmas Trees at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Evansville’s West Side. They do it, says tree lot chairman Ed Kuhn, to finance Scout activities for the coming year.
This year, Kujhn bought “just north of 1,000 trees” from two seperate suppliers, and found no hint of a Christmas Tree shortage, as had been reported in previous years. He says Black Friday, when they opened, and the following weekend, are traditionally their best sale days.
Come Christmas Eve, only about 50 trees were left, so the Scouts put up a sign that said, “self-service tree lot,” and ceased manning the lot, allowing the needy to come by and help themselves to a fresh-cut Christmas tree.
Kuhn says the tree sale netted enough to take 75 members of the Scout troop to experience New York during the month of June.
