Four horses have died over a six day period at Churchill Downs, all in the week leading up to Kentucky horse racing’s most important day.
One of those horses was a Kentucky Derby entrant.
Trainer Saffie Joseph Junior was suspended by Churchill Down leaders after two horses in his care died of undetermined causes.
That suspension announcement came just minutes after the horse racing commission said that all horses trained by Mr. Joseph would be scratched until further notice.
