Someone has created a mock ad for a fake American Girl doll named Karen that’s quickly gone viral.
The doll “ad” was shared on the Facebook page Adam The Creator and in it introduces Karen as the “2020 Girl of the Year.” She’s wearing a purple tracksuit and pushing a Walmart shopping cart – while not wearing a face mask, naturally, and she’s holding a handgun. The fake ad reads “She’s an independent thinker who refuses to wear a mask in public places.”
It may look like an American Girl doll ad, but there are some telltale signs it’s not, you know, like the gun! It’s obviously a parody and many people found it hysterical on social media. But American Girl didn’t seem to see the humor in it and responded to comments from those who didn’t get it as a joke to assure them that they “are taking the appropriate steps to ensure this is removed.” In another response, they tweeted they were working to “ensure this copyright violation is handled appropriately.” But the thing is, there’s a difference between copyright infringement and protected parody law, so that Karen doll will probably stay on the Internet, whether AG likes it or not.
