The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and the Evansville Police Department have launched a joint river patrol on the Ohio River.
The unit covers 36 miles of shoreline.
Deputies and officers are on the water every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until sundown for the entire boating season.
Deputy Rob Henson says presence is prevention, adding that the patrol’s mission goes beyond enforcement.
The goal is to make a lasting impact through conversations about water safety.
Boaters caught operating under the influence will be stopped and detained, and their boat will be impounded.
Henson adds that passengers under the age of 14 are required by law to wear a life jacket.
