Bennie H. Coomer, former Police Chief of Princeton, has passed away at 98.
Coomer dedicated five decades of his life to protecting and serving the City of Princeton. He was sworn into the Princeton Police Department in 1956 and retired in 2006. Coomer served as Chief of Police from 1976 to 1979, and as Assistant Chief of Police from 1980 until his retirement.
In 2002, Coomer was recognized as the longest-serving active police officer in the state of Indiana. Dec. 14, 2002, was officially declared “Bennie Coomer Day” across the state in recognition of his extraordinary commitment.
Coomer was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Juanita, who passed away in 2020. He is survived by his three children, five grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, with burial to follow at Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the service time Tuesday.
